Review: The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight

February 4, 2024 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight, but when Girdy mentioned it, I thought it sounded like a fun time. After all, I like rock music, I like classical music, and I like experiences – so why not?

A review of Tales of Transatlantic Freedom, Fringe 2023

August 16, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Andrea is a talented singer, and Howard is a creative musician who can make music out of anything. However, much of the music they played was new to me or not the kind of music I would usually listen to on Spotify.

A review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Fringe 2023

August 15, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a remarkable musical adaptation that blends the book with Disney songs. It is well-paced, powerfully sung, tragic, lovely, and thoughtful. I highly recommend it.

A review of Initial Consult, Fringe 2023

August 14, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Initial Consult is a show worth watching, and it’s worth skipping other shows for. Charlotte Grimmer plays a character that’s both alien to us and wholly relatable simultaneously, and then there’s music, comedy, shock and tap dancing.

A Review of 007 Voices of Bond, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Powerfully sung and entertaining live music inter-spliced with a short, exciting history of James Bond—absolutely one for the fans and likely a hit for everyone else.

A review of The Theory of Relativity, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The Theory of Relativity is a musical that explores the universal experiences of young adults as they navigate school, relationships, and self-discovery. It’s an early start at the Fringe, but a safe one, and I enjoyed the show.

A review of The Sorries, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The Sorries are a chance to hear songs sung by Scottish farmers and fighters hundreds of years ago. The performance and venue are both class, feeling safe and practised, and this gig feels ideal for people interested in history.

David Hoare has that magic combination of quick wit and observational insight. Dress in layers and grab a tix to “1 Billion Songs Please!”.
