Review of Will Owen: Like, Nobody’s Watching

August 13, 2024 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

I hadn’t heard of Will Owen before, but I was keen to come along to this LGBTQIA+ friendly show for what looked like a glittery, fun time.

The vibe

Will Owen loves watching shows; particularly Strictly Come Dancing, Loose Women, apparently. He used to be obsessed with shows like Britain’s Got Talent, and The X Factor, and would make his family perform and go through an entire selection process every Christmas.

He’s a babysitter, and has some fun stories to recount about the kids he looks after, too – and one in particular who is clearly gay. There are some parallels here looking back at Young Will, and Present-Day Will trying to help this newer generation find their feet (but in a comedic way).

He also talks about his own experiences working in an office before he became a babysitter, and I what happened when he lost all motivation for the job.

Will’s a lot of fun on stage, although it was mostly a very supportive crowd, he also knows how to deal with hecklers and lads messing about. The photo above shows how bright those pink lights were, though, and I think it was just slightly too much for me.

There was some audience participation, and luckily (or unluckily for him) most of it centered on a builder called Tom, who may or may not have wanted to be an astronaut when he was older. There was a payoff when we got to see Tom’s fantasy Strictly-style dance acted out on stage with Will as his partner.

Overall

I had a really good time at Will Owen: Like, Nobody’s Watching. Could have done with more musical numbers, but that’s not what the show’s about – it’s predominantly standup, and Will funny, confident and great fun. I loved that payoff at the end, though!

Summary

LGBTQIA+ friendly show, glittery, fun, laughs-a-minute and Will Owen can hold his own in a crowd.
