Review: Music & Murder By…, Fringe 2026

Staging a brand-new musical on a tight festival run is a high-wire act, but Music & Murder By… turns that creative pressure into a darkly comic bloodbath. Running at the Annexe at theSpace @ Symposium Hall for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this sharp 80-minute production follows a desperate writing team locked away in an isolated retreat to finish a commissioned score before their deadline expires.

Written through a transatlantic collaboration between composer Wikus van der Hoven and lyricist Jessica Welsh, the production starts in familiar murder-mystery territory before pivoting into something much more inventive. When creative stagnation turns homicidal in an off-grid cabin packed with survivalist weaponry, the resulting chaos delivers one of the most energetic surprises on the Southside this August.

From Prepper Paranoia to Creative Breakthrough

The premise introduces a lyricist and composer driven to breaking point by their perfectionist, block-ridden collaborator. To force progress, the team secludes themselves in a remote American prepper cabin without phones or outside distractions. The pressure cookers boil over when they discover the cabin is fully stocked with lethal hardware, sparking a scheme to save the show by eliminating the roadblock in the room.

For the first twenty minutes, the show presents itself as a competent, predictable Fringe farce. Then comes an unscripted flash of character comedy involving a batch of onstage muffins, in which an actor attempts to wolf down the baked goods between rapid-fire lines. It was funny. Watching the actors trying to cope with their own unscripted mirth was a highlight. As it happens, from that moment, the entire production kicks into high gear. The stock tropes fall away, giving space for imaginative twists in which the central puzzle shifts from working out who the killer is to questioning who is actually dying.

Faded Divas and Meta-Musical Pacing

The narrative gains real bite when the awkward writer’s mother crashes the retreat. As a scandal-prone, faded Broadway diva whose sworn enemy happens to be funding the musical in question, she introduces fresh emotional sabotage into an already unstable room. The script smartly mirrors the creative struggles of its characters, balancing contemporary pop-rock numbers with sharp commentary on artistic compromise and family expectations.

Backed by live music under Freya Hartley’s musical direction, the four-strong cast, including West End and major touring veterans such as Maddison Bulleyment and Ollie Wray, navigate the tight stage space with punchy comedic timing and rich vocal harmonies. The show transforms from a standard festival run into a quirky, genuinely memorable meta-musical that keeps its audience guessing right up to the final chord.

Music & Murder By… is a witty, fast-paced chamber musical that turns writer’s block into a delightfully chaotic crime scene. While the opening scenes take a beat to establish their rhythm, the payoff is inventive, superbly sung, and thoroughly entertaining.
