Review: Hannah Byczkowski – Killer, Fringe 2026

August 16, 2026 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Hannah Byczkowski brings her debut stand-up hour, Killer, to the Turret at Gilded Balloon Teviot this August. Best known as the winner of BBC’s The Traitors and co-host of the hit podcast Ghost Huns, Byczkowski steps away from television screens and onto the Edinburgh Festival Fringe stage with an energetic, macabre exploration of mortality. Nestled inside the newly refurbished neo-gothic hub at Bristo Square, the intimate Turret space provides a fitting setting for an afternoon spent laughing at the inevitable.

Arriving on stage in striking prints and stripes, Byczkowski wasted no time establishing total command of the room. Drawing directly on her background as a former palliative care worker and a self-confessed childhood obsession with the Titanic tragedy, she tackles death, hypochondria, and failed weight loss routines with relentless high spirits. The 5:10 pm slot offers festival-goers a fast-paced comedy hour that turns gloomy topics into sharp, accessible entertainment.

Morbid Musings and Feigned Outrage

Death serves as the spine of Killer, yet the atmosphere inside the Turret remains upbeat from start to finish. Byczkowski approaches mortality with the breezy confidence of someone who has spent years around end-of-life care and emerged completely desensitised to the grim details. Rather than leaning into tragedy, she uses her experiences to build a playful, buoyant rapport with the crowd.

Her audience interactions rely on mock indignation, teasing audience members for life choices ranging from marital decisions to mundane answers about what they want to know before they die. When spectators offer the “wrong” response, Byczkowski playfully sentences them to doom, yet her natural charm keeps the interaction warm and inclusive. Nobody in the room feels alienated; instead, the crowd eagerly leans into the shared absurdity.

Layered Callbacks and Unrelenting Energy

While the show begins with familiar observational stand-up rhythms, Killer reveals smarter construction as the hour unfolds. Byczkowski maintains a relentless pace, demanding full attention through sheer vocal energy and physical presence. She powers through the runtime without a single drop in momentum.

The strongest moments arrive when earlier throwaway comments resurface as punchlines later in the set. These layered callbacks elevate the performance above standard festival fare, demonstrating a carefully considered structure beneath the easy-going persona. By the time the final threads tie together, the audience reaction confirms that the jokes land with precision.

Overall

Hannah Byczkowski: Killer is a delightfully buoyant take on mortality, powered by infectious charisma and clever narrative callbacks. It serves as an ideal pre-dinner festival show to kick off an evening in Edinburgh with friends.
