Review: Cass Art Launches with Big Discounts in Edinburgh, George Street

June 16, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

Attention all artists, makers and creatives! Cass Art is now open in Edinburgh, and you can take advantage of some pretty hefty opening discounts right now!

Which, of course, meant I had to get my ass over to George Street ASAP for a review!

I knew Cass Art were coming to Edinburgh – I’d walked past the ‘coming soon’ sign for a while and was quite excited – but getting this in an email is what first alerted me to the fact it was actually open:

First impressions

As you can perhaps tell from the fact I’m on their mailing list, I’m no stranger to Cass Art – I’d ordered from their online store at least a couple of times, and have always found them great value for money with a fantastic range of products for artists and makers – with budgets ranging from students all the way to professional level.

In the past, I’d bought an easel from them online, as well as some acrylic Posca pens, watercolours, and some mixed media pads. It’d always been a smooth experience and their emails have never been overly spammy, so when I saw Cass Art were opening in the ‘Burgh, I got pretty excited.

And it turned out I was right to be! The shop (formerly Paperchase) is full to the brim of a wide range of artists’ supplies, and the opening discount is also running alongside their general up to 50% off sale. Happy days!

It’s fabulous, as an artist, to just be able to wander around and look at ALL THE INFINITELY COOL POSSIBILITIES just waiting for you to pick ’em up and start creating. Oh my word. I had to hold myself back.

I also really like their signage and manifesto within the store, which is a really nice touch.

Another addition is their canvas bags, which in my case reads ‘LET’S FILL EDINBURGH WITH ARTISTS’!

Yes, let’s do that, and I hope this review helps accomplish such a thing by spreading the word!

Range of products

Like I said above, Cass Art has a fantastic range of products on their online store, and their physical store – although being limited by the laws of physics – is no different.

I hope you can tell from my video just how much there is to choose from, but you’ll find all the big names like Derwent, Winsor & Newton, and Faber-Castelle, right down to their own brand of products.

Another point, quite interestingly, Cass Art are one of the only shops who just sell rolls and rolls of canvas. So, you can choose how much you want!

Customer service

When I was visiting the shop, I was lucky enough to have a couple of chats with Danny, who very kindly showed me around and gave me some insights into the store and what was still to come.

Included in that, was a much bigger range from Pith, a vegan, British supplier from Berwick-Upon-Tweed who produce responsibly made, recyclable artists’ sketchbooks, notebooks and pads.

He was also incredibly knowledgable about all things art related, and gave me some fab tips when it came to linseed oil and cobalt! Thanks, Danny.

Price

Again, as I’ve come to expect from Cass Art, they have something to suit just about all budgets, which makes it feel like a really inclusive, friendly place to shop and support.

We needed another decent art shop in the ‘Burgh, and for an art student like me, these price points are incredibly welcome.

Also, if you spend enough money with them, you’ll also get a fabulous canvas bag to hold all your lovely new supplies – so, that’s a bonus!

Overall

I’m over the moon that Cass has opened up, and I’ll definitely be back! Although, admittedly, it might be a bit dangerous for me shopping there, as I had to hold myself back the first time.
