Review: ‘The Retreat’ will make you moist in your men-ses

August 12, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

Birdy headed to one of her favourite venues, The Underbelly at Cowgate, to watch The Retreat – a fabulous variety comedy show themed around a corporate retreat for a company that makes period pants. As everyone filed into the Underbelly’s Big Belly, there was an air of anticipation as we awaited the acts to appear. […]

Review: The Baron and the Junk Dealer, Fringe 2023

August 12, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

The story starts in a time that’s not now, and somewhere really far from here. In the time of something that could only be described as space battles. There’s been a crash, and the only remaining survivors are Watto (Newman) – a junk dealer, and the mysterious Baron (Ratliff).

A review of Nabil Abdulrashid: The Purple Pill, Fringe 2023

Nabil Abdulrashid: The Purple Pill will make you acknowledge that we’ve screwed up but can still turn things around. This comedian has a powerful message and isn’t shy about sharing it. There’s laughter and tears.

A review of Paul Merton’s Impro Chums, Fringe 2023

August 12, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Paul Merton’s Impro Chums is a welcome return to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Paul Merton, Suki Webster, Richard Vranch, Mike McShane and Kirsty Newton are in fine comedic form.

A review of Amelia Bayler: I Work in Customer Service But I’m Actually a Pop Star, Fringe 2023

August 11, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

It was Birdy’s first time in the BlundaBus, and she got a warm welcome from Amelia Bayler as she made her way through the curtain, up the stairs and plonked down on the nearest bench ready for a fun show. I’d never seen Amelia Bayler perform before, but apparently she had this very same venue […]

A review of Ginzel’s Little Cordoba: A Double Bill, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Up close and personal high-brow theatre from award-winning Korean/Irish playwright Rena Brannan. A tidy team of actors brings two stories of friendships and the dangers of London to life.

Review of Lost Cabaret: Nonsense in the Night, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

As a general rule, I’m usually up for anything cabaret, and anything a bit weird, whimsical and silly, so this show appealed to me whilst browsing the media portal. I didn’t realise until after I’d booked that it was based in the famous Magical Spiegelyurt, so that was also a bit of a treat.

A review of Rachel Parris: Work in Progress, Fringe 2023

August 10, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Rachel Parris is fantastic and worth seeing, even if the Work in Progress is an honest-to-goodness description of the state of the show and not a clever name.
