Road closures in Edinburgh for the Olympic Torch

June 12, 2012 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

The Olympic Torch arrives in Edinburgh on the 13th of June. The flame also passes out of Edinburgh on the 14th on its way to Duddingston, Musselburgh and then Dalkeith.

There are a number proposed road closures in Edinburgh because of the Olympic Torch. They are;

  • Castlehill
  • Ramsay Lane
  • Ramsay Garden
  • Mound Place (except event vehicles and residents parking)
  • Johnston Terrace
  • Lawnmarket (except event vehicles and junction of George IV Bridge/Bank Street)
  • Castle Wynd North Steps
  • Upper Bow – in its entirety
  • Parliament Square West(except event vehicles)
  • St Giles Street

The closures will be active from 1pm to 11pm.

On Wednesday, the 14th, the following road closures due to the Olympic Flame are;

  • The Mound
  • Market Street junction with Mound
  • North Bank Street
  • Bank Street
  • George IV Bridge

The Lothian and Borders Police are predicting delays. Chief Supt Derek Robertson of Lothian and Borders Police told the media;

“Anyone intending to travel on Wednesday and Thursday when the torch relay is in our area should plan their journey in advance and be aware that road restrictions and closures may be in place at various locations.

“Along the torch route, traffic congestion and delays are inevitable as traffic will be held to allow the torch to proceed.

“I would ask that people use the detailed information available and plan accordingly for their journey on these key days. They should avoid Olympic Torch Relay routes at certain times unless they are there specifically attending for the celebrations and events.”
