The Queens Arms is a basement pub located on Frederick Street. It sits halfway between Queen Street and George Street, just a short walk from Princes Street. You descend a flight of stairs to enter, provided you are mobile enough, and the steps aren’t too icy. Inside, you find a popular venue that often requires a booking.
A Book Nook with Beer

First impressions suggest an underground library or a book nook that serves alcohol. The decor is a standout feature, with wingback chairs and shelves stacked with books. It feels like it was designed for Instagram or a television series. Some tables are secluded, requiring you to move barricades to access your private area, which adds a neat touch despite likely being a hassle for staff.
The atmosphere is consistently busy. Families and groups frequent the pub, and it can be difficult to get a table without a reservation. I have visited during the festival and on bleak January days, and it remains bustling – a testament to its popularity or perhaps the Crave loyalty program.
Pub Grub and Pints

The bar serves Cold Town Beer, which is a positive. The food menu caters to those who are food-motivated, offering sandwiches, toasties, and hash browns. The starter section and main courses feature pub classics like fish and chips, chicken salad, burgers, and haggis, neeps, and tatties.
However, availability can be an issue. Items have sold out on me numerous times, suggesting they are victims of their own success. If your preferred main is unavailable, desserts like sticky toffee pudding or chocolate orange trifle are solid consolation prizes.
Things to do in the New Town
Frederick Street is perfectly positioned for exploring Edinburghβs New Town. Shoppers are close to the high-end boutiques onΒ George StreetΒ and the high-street favourites on Princes Street. For book lovers inspired by the pubβs decor, Waterstones is nearby on Princes Street.
Travellers can reach the area easily from Edinburgh Waverley station (via TheTrainLine). For accommodation, options include Britannia Hotels or IHG, both of which have properties in the city centre. Visitors looking for local tours might check out Imagine Experiences.
Overall

The Queens Arms offers a good atmosphere and acceptable food in a unique, library-style setting. It is not the most accessible venue due to the stairs, and it gets incredibly busy. Booking ahead is highly recommended to ensure you get a seat and a meal.
