One of my big discoveries during the 2025 Edinburgh Festival season was St Leonard’s Bar on St Leonard’s Street. I knew it in its former life as The High Dive, but the transformation is remarkable. While the layout is similar, the vibe is completely different, and it was a fantastic find for a weary festival-goer.
It is just a short walk away from the Pleasance, but just enough to be off the beaten track. This is a fantastic bar with local beers, which you might struggle to find elsewhere during the festival, and a really interesting menu. It was the perfect place to refuel and recharge.
The Vibe

St Leonard’s Bar has a wonderfully welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. It is a genuine, locally-owned pub, and that authenticity shines through. During the festival, it was a welcome respite from the chaotic energy of the city, yet it still had a lively buzz about it.
It’s the sort of place you can comfortably sit at the bar for a chat, or retreat to a table to tap up some notes. The staff are super friendly, and the whole place is very inclusive. It is both dog-friendly and LGBTQ+ friendly, which contributes to its warm and inviting character.
The Food and Drink
The menu offers exactly the sort of hearty, delicious food a tired journalist needs to get through the next show. We’re talking burgers, mac and cheese, and pizzas – high-energy, high-protein comfort food that hits the spot. The kitchen also closes late, which is a huge bonus during the Fringe.
I was especially impressed by the drinks selection. They have a great range of local beers, as well as cocktails. The prices are very reasonable and seem to be immune to the festival price inflation that can plague other bars in the area. We spotted a deal for a burger, fries and a cocktail for only £10, which is incredible value.
Things to do in the Southside
St Leonard’s Bar is in a great location for exploring Edinburgh’s Southside. It is just a stone’s throw from the Pleasance, making it the perfect pre- or post-show spot. You are also within walking distance of The Queen’s Hall, a fantastic live music venue and the Monkey Barrel for comedy.
For those looking to explore the city, you can easily walk to the National Museum of Scotland or take a hike up Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park for stunning views of the city. If you’re arriving by train, Edinburgh Waverley is the main station.
For those looking for a thrill, The Edinburgh Dungeon is a popular attraction. And if you’re planning a longer stay, you can find a wide range of accommodation on sites like Expedia and Hotels.com.
Overall
St Leonard’s Bar was a delightful find and one I’ll definitely be returning to, both during the festival and throughout the year. It is a friendly, affordable, and genuinely local pub with a great atmosphere and fantastic food. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel right at home. I can’t recommend it enough.
