Review of Rocksalt, Leith

March 18, 2013 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Rocksalt on Constitution Street has become my go to place for a breakfast treat.

Breakfast is a hard fought battle down in the Shore end of Leith, so why has Rocksalt done so well to win my custom? Quality and service – yup, those two stalwarts.

The staff at Rocksalt are friendly and efficient. That can be a challenge in the rush hour around breakfast and lunch. The place can get pretty busy and so to be efficient the temptation must be to put your head down and get on with it. My experience with Rocksalt is that the staff keep their heads up, smiles on and somehow manage to chit chat with customers while still being efficient too.

Do keep rush hour in mind. The café can get quite busy. You’re not guaranteed to get a table. Booking, if possible at all, seems pointless.

Rocksalt acts like a deli. At lunch people line up to build their sandwiches and rolls. Those with tables can order food from a menu. Sure, this menu isn’t huge and there aren’t any wow items but what they do is kept to the highest quality.

I like to order a sausage roll for breakfast. Sound simple? It should be… but somehow Rocksalt seem to go above and beyond by giving me an extremely good bread roll and high quality sausages. This is not a small, cheap, roll stuffed with greasy “meat”. What a difference it makes!

One note of warning about Rocksalt; watch what you say. Lots of local businesses like to come and discuss business around the tables at the back. If you can overhear gossip from a table near you then others can overhear your business chat too.
