Fresh from award-winning, sold-out runs across the globe, Lil Wenker’s smash-hit Bangtail is back for one last showdown at the Pleasance.
This is a tale of cowboy clown chaos, following the baddest gunslinger in Texas on an epic journey from the Wild West to the American office in a desperate search for his own manhood. Saddle up for an hour of pure, unbridled joy.
Roped In
Be warned: this is not a show for passive observers. Lil Wenker is an absolute expert at messing with you, and the success of Bangtail hinges on its rowdy, loving, and constant audience interaction. The fourth wall isn’t just broken; it’s lassoed, hogtied, and dragged into the centre of the action. At least half the laughs come from Wenker daring you to find the extrovert inside and play along.
A central thread involves Bangtail’s nemesis, a role brilliantly cast from an unsuspecting audience member each night. The show I saw featured an exceptionally talented individual who was game for a laugh and played their part to perfection. It’s this wild, unpredictable element that makes the show feel so alive, a testament to Wenker’s skill at guiding the chaos she so gleefully unleashes. A hilarious hour of unbridled cowboy clown chaos.
A Man in Search of His Manhood
Beneath the mayhem lies a performer of incredible skill and a story of surprising depth. Wenker is a master of physical comedy. Her bushy, drooping moustache and expertly woven facial expressions become instruments of storytelling, used to gain consent, deliver cues, and convey everything from smug satisfaction to stunned disbelief without a single word. It is a true masterclass in non-verbal comedy.
The narrative itself is a brilliantly silly and surprisingly moving deconstruction of toxic masculinity. When our hero loses his title as the “Baddest Cowboy”, he finds himself on a redemption arc that leads to a life in accountancy. Co-created with director Cecily Nash, the show lovingly spoofs Spaghetti Westerns while exploring what it means to be a man. It’s a journey that is, at once, funny, stupid, and profoundly touching. This is adult comedy, though; raw, raucous and definitely not one for a family outing.
Overall
Bangtail is a riotous success and a shining example of interactive theatre at its finest. It’s an unpredictable, wild ride that leaves you breathless with laughter. Lil Wenker is an immense talent with a magnetic stage presence who is clearly destined for great things. A performer to watch, and a show you’d be a fool to miss.
