Jess Robinson has long been a fixture of the Edinburgh Fringe, and I first saw her years ago in what felt like a pub backroom.
To see her now, commanding the prestigious Piccolo Tent in the heart of Assembly’s George Square Gardens, is to witness an artist who has truly arrived. In Your Song, a tribute to the legendary Elton John, Robinson not only fills the large venue but owns it with a warmth and energy that is simply infectious.
An Electric Atmosphere
The magic begins before the show even officially starts. Robinson is out working the crowd, her natural charisma on full display. She shares a moment with a young girl and her mum, and the genuine smile that spreads across the youngster’s face is a testament to the performer’s effortless charm. It sets a welcoming tone for the entire hour.
That said, be aware that there are no content warnings on the ticket, and a couple of well-placed F-bombs do make an appearance. The young girl I saw earlier was oblivious, and no harm was done, but for those with super-sensitive ears, it’s worth noting. It’s a small detail in an otherwise glorious show, a sign of the relaxed, high-energy vibe that Robinson cultivates.
Pitch-Perfect Impressions
At its heart, Your Song is a showcase for Robinson’s phenomenal talent. She is a gifted singer, a sharp comedian, and, above all, a fantastic impressionist. The show’s genius lies in not just singing Elton’s songs, but singing them in the voices of other celebrities, complete with brilliant comedic twists.
We’re treated to Liza Minnelli making several blooming hilarious attempts to get through a Lion King number. The highlight, however, is a duet constructed from audience suggestions, pitting the likes of Lily Allen against Liz Truss. Robinson’s versatility is astonishing; you get the sense she could successfully stage a rap battle between the Tory party and a street crew and make it work. The energy is sky-high, the audience interaction is just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, and there isn’t a single lowlight. At one point, the piano, expertly played by Musical Director Matthew Floyd Jones, felt a touch loud, but it was a fleeting moment in an ocean of brilliance.
Overall
So, should you go and see Jess Robinson if you aren’t a die-hard Elton John fan? Absolutely. While I enjoy his music, I’m no superfan, and I had a whale of a time. This is a masterclass in musical comedy and vocal performance. Funny, uplifting, and packed with jaw-dropping talent, Your Song is one of the best things you’ll hear at the Fringe this year.
Tip for Jess fans. The book Life is Rosi, a memoir about her grandmother and female identity, will be released next year.
