Gautam’s is one of my favourite Nepalese and Indian restaurants in Edinburgh, and I’ve been to loads of contenders. So, other than looking gorgeous, what does Gautam’s do right?
Firstly, Gautam’s has a unique location as it’s almost alone on Dalziel Place, which extends London Road. It’s not a monopoly, but by this time, you’re a distance from either Portobello or the centre of town.
Secondly, I never have enough time, and Gautam’s is always very swift, with no compromise on food.
Thirdly, I visit just before a gaming night. That’s hard to beat.
Gautam’s vibe
The colourful corner will lure you in, but you might then hesitate as you wonder whether the building is open. It probably is, so push open that door and step inside.
You’ll be met by a friendly face. I’ve been many times, and I always have. If you’ve not booked, and I never have, then it’s a risk because you might not get a seat. It seems pretty random, but I’m sure Easter Road and Meadowbank activity plays a big part.
The inside of the restaurant is just as wonderful as the outside. It has plush seats, lots of plants, and enough space to relax. This is a restaurant you can go to for a date, take your parents out for a treat (go on, you know you should), or meet friends.
You’ll get water to start, a waiter or two, and swift attention. I’ve been when they’ve squeezed me in, letting me know when I need the table back, and I’ve been when I’m running late (no surprise) and asked whether they can feed me for 30 minutes and despite all that, I’ve never seen them frazzled. In fact, staff retention is impressive, which is an incredible feat in Edinburgh hospitality.
I like the vibe here.
Gautam’s food

It’s a big menu but not a phone book menu. I don’t think you can go wrong, and trust me, I’ve thoroughly explored the options to “research” this review.
You’ve two choices of starters; regular or Gautum’s Signature Starters. The former includes usua;s like samosa and pakora, the latterโฆ well, the same, but perhaps a bit spicier and a touch less common. For example, there’s Poleko Kukhuro (chicken leg) and Malekhu Ko Macha Pakora (fish).
The “signature” approach is carried forward into the mains. As “old favourites,” you can have dishes such as chicken korma, chicken madras, tikka masala, or jalfrezi. Then there are signature dishes like methi gosht, lamb Kathmandu, or Himalayan hot pot chicken. The hot pot was one of my first orders and is still a favourite.
There are also biriyani dishes, tandoori sections, and a chef’s classics section, which I recommend. The garlic chilli chicken deserves its spicy rating, and I also favour the chicken taka-talk and butter chicken.
Gautam’s menu has two unusual twists. There’s a kids’ section with three choices suitable for under 13: chicken korma, butter chicken, or the wise choice of chicken nuggets with chips.
The other temptation and unusual twist for an Indian restaurant is the dessert menu, and once you try the Nutella-covered Peshwari, it’s hard to resist its charms ever again.
Things to do near London Road

As noted, there’s the Meadowbank Sports Centre and an Edinburgh Palette that often hosts galleries and art shows some 15-minute walk away.
There’s also Bellfield Brewery and the option to double-up a beer tour with a trip to an Indian restaurant. I’ve never seen a gaggle of drunks pile into Gautam’s, and I hope I never do.
You’re not that far from the bottom of the Royal Mile if you get to Gautam’s, and I have used it as an escape during the Edinburgh Festival season.
Overall
I go to Gautum’s several times a year, and I’m honestly thrilled that they’re opening a second location near me. Thamel is looking to replace the Howlin’ Hound.
Update – May 2024: Thamel is open, and it’s amazing!
Gautam’s scores top marks for food, vibe and staff. It’s not an easy location for many people, except locals, but it works for me, and if you’re hungry in the area, then it’s a no-brainer.
A review of Gautam’s
Summary
Gautam’s is a favourite Nepalese and Indian restaurant in a city full of great restaurants. If you’re hungry and in the Meadowbank end of London Road then it’s worth a visit but booking in advance is a wiser idea.
