Review: All the Hits of The Beach Boys, Fringe 2026

August 19, 2026 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

London tribute act The Beached Boys have returned to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for their fifth consecutive year, taking up residency at Le Monde on George Street. Performing inside the basement-floor Shanghai nightclub space, the five-piece group deliver an afternoon celebration dedicated to the sunny, intricate catalogue of California’s most famous musical export.

Running at a brisk 50 minutes, the show packs in decades of surf-rock classics and complex vocal arrangements. It offers an energetic, faithful homage to Brian Wilson and company, easily entertaining a dedicated room of longtime fans in the heart of the New Town.

Harmonies, High Notes, and Tight Musicianship

Tackling the Beach Boys’ discography is no small technical feat, given the dense vocal layering and signature falsettos required. The Beached Boys prove well-practised and genuinely capable, capturing the essential spirit of the originals. Even with the mid-Fringe strain beginning to showβ€”one band member noted a tired voice, prompting seamless vocal support from his bandmatesβ€”the performance never faltered. To an untrained ear, the cover was imperceptible.

The band worked through a rapid succession of iconic hits alongside an original tribute track dedicated to Brian Wilson placed neatly in the middle of the set. While the sound mix occasionally leaned too heavily on the instrumentation at the expense of vocal clarity, the group’s authentic musicianship shone through. They do not preach or lecture; they simply play the music with energy, skill, and conviction.

Venue Logistics and Audience Atmosphere

Shanghai at Le Monde provides an intimate 100-seat setting, situated just a short walk from the bustling Assembly Rooms and St Andrew Square. The basement-club aesthetic of Shanghai means the band fills the room with sound effortlessly, creating an up-close atmosphere that suits the nostalgic setlist.

Access requires some consideration before booking. Reaching the venue involves navigating an exposed, outdoor spiral staircase that can be slick in typical August drizzle. While an elevator is available inside the building, there is no direct ramp access. Despite the physical hurdles, the predominantly mature crowd handled the stairs without fuss, packing the room to capacity for what felt like one of the shortest, fastest-moving 50-minute sets on the Fringe circuit.

Overall

The Beached Boys deliver a tight, uplifting, and highly authentic salute to one of pop music’s greatest back catalogues. If you want a breezy afternoon of classic harmonies in the New Town, this show is an absolute treat.
