Review: A Dram Is Worth A Thousand Words, Fringe 2025

August 17, 2025 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

“A Dram is Worth a Thousand Words” is a fantastic idea and an excellent way to get an introduction to the world of Scotch whisky. If you’re even mildly curious about whisky, this show is a cost-effective and educational experience. It’s perfect for those who want to learn a bit about the spirit without committing to a full-blown tour or course. However, if you know for a fact that you don’t like whisky, this might not be the show for you.

Beyond the Tasting

Whisky still in parts on table

While the event is billed as a whisky tasting, that description doesn’t fully capture the experience. You are indeed given a generous dram of three distinct, high-quality whiskies to taste, but the event is much more than that. This is an educational journey, where a knowledgeable Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) expert guides you through each whisky.

The session provides a unique opportunity to ask a whisky connoisseur questions and get insights into the intricate process of whisky-making. During our session, we learned about the origin of the casks – many are broken down and re-coopered in Scotland, as few barrels are made there. We also discussed how the whisky’s taste profile can change depending on the origin and handling of the barrels. It’s this guided, interactive learning that elevates the experience beyond a simple tasting.

A Taste of the Society

The show also serves as a great introduction to the Scotch Malt Whisky Society itself. The SMWS is a global community with venues and membership benefits worldwide, and this show is an excellent way to sample what they offer. While I’ve previously done the full-fledged SMWS tasting, which can include five or six whiskies and a meal, they are much more expensive. This show is a brilliant, more accessible alternative, offering a curated selection of three whiskies without the added cost of food.

The relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to attend solo, though it would also be a fantastic experience to share with a friend. For any whisky fan, a membership to the SMWS is a wonderful present to get anybody, and this Fringe show is the perfect taster for that world.

Overall

“A Dram is Worth a Thousand Words” is a highly recommended experience for anyone with an interest in whisky. It’s an insightful, interactive, and excellent value-for-money show that is as educational as it is enjoyable. It’s the perfect way to spend an hour discovering new drams and expanding your knowledge with a genuinely passionate expert.
