November 4, 2026 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Edinburgh’s festive season officially begins on Saturday, 7 November 2026, as St James Quarter hosts its annual Christmas Light Switch-On and Parade in the city centre. Forth 1 presenters Boogie and Arlene will lead the event at Register Square starting at 5:00 pm, alongside a charity donation drive for the Cash for Kids Mission Christmas appeal.

The evening features a full parade through the Galleria, combining traditional Christmas elements with unexpected performances. Attendees will see Santa and Mrs Claus alongside cast members from The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh’s production of A Christmas Carol, world champion beatboxer Hobbit, and the all-female brass band She’s Got Brass. St James Quarter relies heavily on these large-scale footfall drivers to compete with the traditional Princes Street markets, and this mixed billing offers a much-needed modern twist to the standard shopping centre Christmas launch.

Register Square provides the central focal point for the switch-on on 7 November. Located at the main entrance to the Quarter, the square offers a wide open space for the crowds that gather to watch the lights go on. The exposed architecture of the Galleria entrance creates a natural wind tunnel here, so attendees should dress appropriately for a cold Edinburgh evening.

The event doubles as a major collection point for Cash for Kids. Visitors are encouraged to bring a gift to the Guest Services Lounge on Level 1. Following the switch-on, Boogie and Arlene will walk through the Quarter to collect donations from brand partners. This initiative helps ensure vulnerable children across Edinburgh have something to open on Christmas morning.

If you are heading into Edinburgh for the light switch-on, the City Centre offers plenty of options to make a full day of it. The area is dense with hospitality venues, though nearby restaurants can be operating at near total capacity. If you prefer to avoid the immediate rush after the parade, relying on food delivery networks like Deliveroo or UberEats to have a hot meal waiting at home is a highly pragmatic alternative.

Those travelling from outside the city can easily grab tickets via TheTrainLine, alighting at Edinburgh Waverley, which sits just across the road from the Quarter. If you plan to stay overnight, platforms such as Booking.com list a variety of nearby hotels and apartments. Families travelling from further afield might find that arranging a vehicle through a reliable car hire service makes transporting Christmas shopping and winter coats much easier than navigating the crowded tram network.

The St James Quarter Christmas Light Switch-On takes place on Saturday, 7 November 2026, from 5:00 pm at Register Square. The parade will move through the Galleria, and visitors can drop off Mission Christmas donations at the Level 1 Guest Services Lounge.
