News: Royal Mile Silver sets up permanent home on Jeffrey Street

November 22, 2025 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

A familiar face from Edinburgh’s festive scene has put down permanent roots in the Old Town, just in time for the Christmas rush. Chandra Mather, the founder of Royal Mile Silver and a long-time trader at the city’s seasonal markets, has opened her first brick-and-mortar shop on Jeffrey Street.

We bumped into Chandra recently while researching our guide to Edinburgh’s Christmas Market, where she has been a fixture for decades. While her stall on Princes Street remains a go-to for stocking fillers this winter (running from 15th November to 4th January 2026), her new permanent location offers something different for locals who want to browse away from the busy thoroughfares.

    A Room with a View

The new shop is located at 11 Jeffrey Street, a curving street often overlooked by tourists rushing between the station and the Royal Mile. Sitting just off the main drag, it offers stunning views of Calton Hill and hosts a growing community of independent cafes and traders.

It is a fitting evolution for a business that began in 1993 on a market stall. Chandra, a world traveller and musician, has spent years sourcing silver from artisans in places as diverse as Tiznit, Timbuktu, Chiang Mai, and Jaipur.

“If you’ve got a dream, no matter how long it takes or how small it starts – don’t give up on it,” Chandra told us. “This shop is proof that perseverance, passion, and a little help from your community can get you there.”

    Personalised Services

The move to a physical store allows the team to offer services that aren’t possible at a market stall. The Jeffrey Street location features a dedicated space for permanent jewellery and engraving, allowing for greater personalisation.

They are also offering consultations for alternative engagement and wedding bands, with Tungsten rings proving particularly popular.

Royal Mile Silver Address: 11 Jeffrey Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1DR Hours: Monday to Sunday, 10am to 7pm
