As a big circus fan and a 30-something who remembers the naughties well, I was keen to see how these two elements would be merged in this show.
As everyone filtered into the Palais du Variété, the music playing was a blast from the past and some audience members were already singing along. Before the show even started there was a nice upbeat atmosphere building already.
Good Vibes
Early in the show the MC tells the audience, “It’s about vibes.” Said vibes are certainly fun and very nostalgic. Said nostalgia ranged from Y2K aesthetics, old texting acronyms to the more emo styles of the naughties.
Early in the show, the performance of a playfully comedic boy band (but much more gymnastic) got the crowd laughing and singing along. While also impressing the audience. This really set the tone for what was to come. At this stage I knew I was definitely in for an enjoyable experience.
Laugh Riot
The all women troupe of YUCK Circus got consistent laughs. A key part of the humour came from the charismatic MC. She helped merge the nostalgic elements with the circus acts, along with the costumes and delightfully nostalgic music. I got a lot of laughs from this show and the people around me certainly did too. It made for a very feel good atmosphere that would make it hard not to smile.
Nostalgia
By the nature of nostalgia, a lot of the humour and references will be lost on those outside of the target generation. But those people could certainly still enjoy all of the circus performances. There is a variety of them aerial, hoop, dancing and more!
YUCK Circus: Naughties is an entertaining and high energy show. It is great fun for an afternoon at the Fringe. If you’re looking to just enjoy some great circus acts with good music, laugh and clap along, this would be a good choice!
