As someone who has probably heard more about conspiracy theories online than I would like to, I was very curious about The Shocking Truth About Flat Earth. How would this subject be tackled in the form of a comedy musical? Turns out it was good fun!
Often seen as the most harmless of the infamous internet conspiracy theories, it was a good choice to pick ‘Flat Earth’ as the focus. They don’t delve into other ones, just comedic passing mentions, and I think that was a good choice.
Humanising
The show is sympathetic to and humanises our main character, Sharon. It’d be easy for a show about this subject to just point and laugh at people who fall for this stuff. Instead this show highlights the difference between those who believe in this conspiracy and those who peddle it for self-gain.
There is also a mini history lesson on the founder of the flat earth conspiracy, and it points out the shortcomings of said man. Shortcomings is putting it lightly!
Upbeat Songs
The cast certainly put on a good performance vocally and got consistent laughs from audience with the humour, upbeat songs and fun dances.
The Shocking Truth About Flat Earth explains how people end up on these rabbit holes online and how they make lonely people feel part of a community.
Although it does address how loss and isolation can lead to people falling for this stuff, the show still captures how patronising and condescending conspiracy theorists can be (and makes it funny).
Laugh Out Loud Fun
The laughs and humanising of Sharon continues when the cast ends up on a mission to prove the Earth is flat. It was definitely fun to come along on the journey with these characters!
