Review: Can this Edinburgh Blogger Get a Much-Needed Energy Boost with Sneak?

June 13, 2023 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

Sneak have been turning heads recently, and they certainly got our attention here at Edinburgh Reviews, which is why I agreed to review a sample of their blue raspberry cans.

Energy drinks haven’t always been my cup of tea (because let’s face it, tea is my cup of tea) – as they have, in the past, been known to give me heart palpitations – but the appeal of trying these shiny new cans and getting an energy boost that would allow me to smash my goals and get more stuff done and did was just too good to ignore.

Plus, Girdy had been talking about it over at our sister publication Geek Native, starting with a harmless April Fool about their eye drops.

Then were was the wooden swords, and their recent anime-inspired video, which looked amazing:

So, when we got the offer to try out different Sneak products, and I saw they had cans, I was very much inclined to say ‘yes’ – although it’s not something we generally do here at Edinburgh Reviews.

Okay, so I’m just about convinced enough to try this Sneak thing. Let’s start the way we should, with first impressions!

Look

I can’t lie, it’s a nice looking 500ml can, bit of pink and blue ombre going on, and it has a nice feel to it, too. Comfortable to drink on the go, and I have my own metal straws that make a nice (depending on who you ask) clinking sound.

Yep, there’s that bunny on the front! Here’s what the can looks like, and also the box it came in (a generous pack of 12 – thanks, Sneak!):

Taste

I got the ‘blue raspberry’ flavour, and I have to be honest, I was bracing myself for an overly chemical, tauriney taste – I was pleasantly surprised, as I actually really like the taste of the blue raspberry Sneak. It’s pleasant and yummy, and doesn’t make drinking the full 500ml feel like a chore.

I’m actually quite keen to try the different flavours now, as I see they have other flavours like ‘tropikilla’, ‘raspberry lemonade’, ‘purple storm’, and ‘strawberry watermelon’!

Nutritional values

I was shocked when I discovered Sneak blue raspberry was only five calories per can! That’s a surefire win right there! It’s also got zero sugar, sweeteners, and natural flavours.

It also has B-vitamins a-plenty; B3, B5, B6 and – HOLY WOW, B12 – the reason I’m getting excited about that is because I was diagnosed with a B12 deficiency a few years ago and get regular B12 injections. There’s no evidence so far that I can’t absorb it, so hoping this will give me a much-needed boost.

It also contains caffeine, which begs the question; will this end the way other energy drink dalliances have ended – with me getting heart palpitations? Sneak does boast it provides sustained energy without the jitters, but there’s only one way to find out for sure!

Price

It’d be remiss of me not to mention the price of Sneak energy cans, and for £23 you can buy yourself a pack of 12 500ml cans. Overall, not too shabby!

The real test

Can Sneak really deliver on the energy front? Time to put it to the test!

Day 1 of Sneak: the carb test

Time to put Sneak to its first test! As a busy artist and writer, I’ve met up for lunch with a client in town. I’ve eaten a baguette, followed by a slice of Victoria sponge cake; in other words, I’ve had all the carbs at Victor Hugo Deli.

Afterwards, I went to film yet another TikTok, and got home around 2:25pm, which is usually the time my energy would start to drop and the need for a carb coma would happen. The best time to crack open my first can of Sneak!

It’s now almost 4pm, and I’m still going strong at my keyboard, so hell yeah, I think we can call that a success!

Day 2 of Sneak: late-ish cinema screening

It’d been a day. Decided to go out to the cinema for an 8:20pm showing of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at Cineworld Fountainpark. I needed to take a drink with me, and what better to keep me going than Sneak?!

Feeling a bit more confident about having not had heart palpitations the last time, I decided to give it a go even though I was on a low carb, calorie deficit kind of a day. Did it hold up? Damn straight it did!

Okay, so it was an amazing film, so I may have stayed alert anyway, but my Sneak kept me going and I didn’t feel in the slightest bit tired despite the longness of day – and it also gave me the energy to walk home again. I think that’s another win.

Editor’s note: What wasn’t a win was the fact that although I’d managed to not have a disaster opening my Sneak in the cinema, it was reacting to my metal straw and bubbling up through it. Annoying but manageable. However, I left the offending metal straw at the cinema, damnit.

Saying that, I’m now writing this just after midnight, and hope I’ll be able to sleep soon…

Day 3 of Sneak: goth clubbing

It was a bittersweet day; the last ever Ascension at the Teviot. So, I was determined to go along, see people, have a dance – and a bloody good time! I’d also been out for most of the day on an adventure to Jupiter Artland.

So, I was going to need energy from somewhere! Bring on the Sneak.

I started drinking my can of Sneak at around 10pm, not long before we had to leave for the club. I wasn’t exactly feeling tired, but I trusted this was going to keep me going into the wee small hours – and it did!

It was a great night, I danced to a few songs – including Gary Numan with Girdy, which was a bonus – caught up with a few folk, and eventually left the club at 2am feeling just as fresh as ever. In fact, I had enough energy to walk the 45 minutes home afterwards!

Another success for Sneak.

Day 4 of Sneak: rowing on the canal

After self and Girdy’s late night at Ascension, we both headed to the canal the next day, as I’d very wisely booked a row boat in advance! (What was I thinking?)

I must admit, I did need a bit of a lie in, and was sure to drink my Sneak before heading out to the canal. I got there with plenty of energy, all ready to… let Girdy take the oars and do most of the work!

I did end up rowing for about 10 minutes at the end, but mostly my arms were occupied with holding my phone up and shooting hilarious content for Edinburgh Reviews (coming soon – the video is already on our TikTok!).

Also, rowing hurt my arms, because I much preferred rowing forwards and apparently that’s harder when that means the boat is going backwards. After the rowing (or non-rowing in my case) we had a very decent walk, before I got home to do some more blogging.

All in all, I’m feeling pretty unstoppable!

Day 5 of Sneak: Puscifer gig in Glasgow

The final day of my Sneak review meant heading through to Glasgow in the evening to see Puscifer live for the first time.

To say I was excited is an understatement, so it made sense to be on top of my game.

I drank my Sneak, walked to Haymarket, walked around Glasgow – which was 28 degrees Celsius, by the way – and had some lovely Japanese food before taking myself to the O2 Academy to revel in the dulcet tones of Maynard James Keenan’s voice.

Puscifer were on top form, despite the heat, and although my feet were starting to bother me due to all of the standing about you tend to do at gigs, the rest of me was having a great time!

It may have been another late night, but I was exhilarated and happy I’d had a great experience with none of the tiredness. Fabulous!

The overall verdict

I don’t think I have a bad thing to say about the blue raspberry Sneak energy cans. They’re low calorie (again, only 5 calories per can), vegan, packed full of vitamins and minerals (including that all-important B12 for me!) and contain zero sugar.

What’s more, it tastes good – not overly artificial or sweet for me to give up halfway through.

I was a bit nervous about trying out these energy drinks, because I haven’t always had the best experience with these things before, but I experienced no ill effects – and no heart palpitations!

In fact, they actually do exactly what they say, and give me energy to go and do all the things – and even write them up afterwards. Even the act of writing this review itself is Sneak-fuelled.
