Review: Ronaq, an Indian restaurant in Comley Bank

January 10, 2025 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Ronaq has been on my to-do list for years, and ever after, a whole bunch of people said it was the best Indian restaurant in Edinburgh in response to a question on the I Love Leith Facebook group.

Girdy trekked through #Edinburgh in the bitter winter to warm wonderfully up at Comely Bank’s Ronaq Indian restaurant.

However, Ronaq isn’t in Leith, and I could never quite find the time to take a walk through Inverleith or even a scenic detour through Dean Village (very scenic, very detour) to the restaurant.

What finally convinced me? Amazingly, this Indian restaurant is offering 50% off the main bill all January.

Ronaq’s food

I found plenty on the extensive (but not silly) menu that I’d go for. In the end, I started with a cheesy seek kebab and then plumbed for the Ronaq Special for my main course, adding boiled rice and a side of Aloo Palak.

The Ronaq Special is a mixed meat and mushroom curry. In fairness, I think you’d be brave and perhaps unwise to go for a “whatever the chef has left curry” in certain places, but I was already comfortable enough with the Comley Bank venue to trust them.

Aloo Palak provided some token greens, but I’m very glad I added it, as the rice bowls in Ronaq are just a little smaller than I’m used to.

In fact, my only possible grumble with Ronaq was that the portions weren’t huge. I’ll go back. I’ll have a starter and two sides again. I might add a naan.

However, it was value for money. With 50% off, it was a steal. I’ve paid less for my drinks at a restaurant than for my whole dinner at Ronaq. It was almost embarrassing!

The food was excellent. It wasn’t too hot in terms of spice or temperature but in the sweet spot of “Just right”.

Ronaq’s vibe

Ronaq Special

Ronaq is almost on the corner of a roundabout that connects Orchard Road, Crewe Road South, Orchard Brae, and Craigleath Road, which are some busy streets. A window seat would have been excellent.

I walked in, was immediately greeted (there’s no shortage of staff here), and there was a bar in front of me, a waiting area with seats just by the door, a seating area with large tables to my left and the main restaurant area which stretched quite far back on my right. Ronaq is a bit of a TARDIS.

I appreciated the waiting area, a chance to sort out my winter coat, hat, bag, gloves, etc, while they quickly checked the table. I was about 10 minutes early, but it was cold enough outside that I wouldn’t even go for a walk around the block.

Service was friendly, and despite this being a mid-week January visit, there were quite a few full tables! As I said, it’s quite a sizeable venue, so I didn’t feel crowded. There could have been three times as many diners, but it had a nice buzz.

I saw plenty of push chairs and families. In part, this is likely due to the 50% off they’re visiting, but it’s also a residential area, and I’m sure locals are loyal to the restaurant.

Things to do in Comley Bank

Well, gee. There’s Ronaq!

There are homes here and not much to lure tourists out but the walk can be interesting, including through Inverleith if you’re coming from Granton or through Stockbridge if you’re coming in from the centre of town, but you could combine a trip through the Dean with a trip to Ronaq.

I’m sure I’ve seen Fringe shows at one of the nearby churches, and if that happens again in August, I’m absolutely going to see if I can coordinate a meal at Ronaq.

Overall

Cheesy seek kebab

It’s tempting to go back to Ronaq again this month. I’ll absolutely remember to check their social media in January 2026 to see if they repeat this deal.

Importantly, even without the 50% off, Ronaq is really good. If you’re in the area, then I think this Indian restaurant is proof you don’t necessarily need to walk into the delights of Stockbridge and the crowds. You could eat here.

Summary

Ronaq offers delicious Indian cuisine in a spacious and welcoming setting, with friendly service and a lively atmosphere catering to families and those seeking a relaxed dining experience. While the portions may be on the smaller side, the high-quality food and reasonable prices, especially with their current January discount, make it a worthwhile visit for anyone in the Comley Bank area.
