Review: Rama Coffee, a cafe in Inverleith

August 29, 2025 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

A coffee shop that’s a wonderful sun trap.

Rama Coffee, located on the corner of Inverleith Row and Ferry Road, is a wonderfully pleasant little coffee shop that has cleverly utilised its space to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s a fantastic addition to Goldenacre.

First impressions are of a bright and airy café, with the large windows flooding the space with light. It’s the sort of place that invites you to linger over a coffee and watch the world go by.

The Venue

What Rama is doing differently from previous tenants of this location is their fantastic use of the window space. Where others had a simple display window, Rama has discovered what is essentially a whole porch.

This means you can sit in the window, at a table, in what is effectively a sunroom. It’s a wonderful sun trap and a glorious place to sit with a coffee and a cake, perhaps with a good book for company. It’s a real highlight.

More recently, Rama has added tables and chairs outside, making it an even more appealing spot on a sunny day. It’s a quaint and comfortable café that feels like a real local gem.

The Food and Drink

It’s more than just a coffee shop. While the coffee is excellent, using beans from local Edinburgh roasters Machina, Rama also has a small but perfectly formed selection of baked goods. On sunny days, they also offer refreshing iced coffee, perfect for enjoying in their sun-trap window or at the tables outside. I think I’ve tried most of the cakes at this point, and they’re all very good.

The secret weapon here, though, are the sandwiches. They’re made on-site, are available from the morning, and often vanish by lunchtime because they are so tasty. You have to be quick to get one.

Rama Coffee is not a place for a huge meal, but it’s the perfect spot for a light lunch, a quick coffee, or a sweet treat. The staff are really friendly, on the ball and quick, which all adds to the pleasant atmosphere.

Goldenacre is a lovely residential area of Edinburgh, but it’s also conveniently located for some of the city’s best attractions. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is just a short walk away, offering a beautiful and tranquil escape from the city.

For those travelling into the city, both Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket Station are easily accessible by bus. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, there are plenty of options on Hotels.com and Expedia.

If you’re in the city for a show, the Edinburgh Playhouse is a top venue. And for a bit of spooky fun, The Edinburgh Dungeon is always a popular choice.

    Overall

Rama Coffee is a delightful addition to the Goldenacre and Inverleith area. It’s a comfortable and friendly coffee shop with a wonderful atmosphere, great coffee, and delicious food. It’s fairly priced, and the clever use of space makes it a standout. I recommend Rama coffee, give them a go.
