Set in medieval Bavaria, it follows the devout Sister Gertrude as she sets out to rid the convent of witches, sin and temptation, all while grappling with temptations of her own.
From the opening moments, it was clear this wasn’t a production interested in playing things straight. Instead, it throws itself headfirst into fast-paced physical comedy, wonderfully ridiculous characters and an infectious energy that quickly spreads through the audience.
Before long, the room was in stitches, and it became one of those Fringe shows that feels like it could be recommended to just about anyone.
Comedy
From the opening moments to the final curtain, this is a laugh-a-minute production that embraces chaos in the very best way. Every joke lands thanks to sharp comic timing, physical comedy and a cast who know exactly how to work a Fringe audience. The laughter is constant, making it one of those rare shows where your cheeks genuinely ache from smiling by the end.
Storyline
The story itself is a witty following of a witchhunt with its own sense of commardery, and you are taken along the journey as the main characters travel through weird and wonderful places, meeting interesting and unique characters along the way. Never knowing what trouble they may encounter.
On-stage chemistry
What truly elevates Nuns! above so many Fringe comedies is the connection between the cast. It’s clear they’re not only committed to entertaining the audience but are genuinely enjoying performing together. That enthusiasm is infectious, making every joke land with even greater impact.
They create an atmosphere that feels fresh rather than overly rehearsed. When something doesn’t quite go to plan, they embrace it without hesitation, weaving the moment into the performance so naturally that it feels intentional. Instead of distracting from the show, these unscripted moments often become some of the funniest of the night.
Their chemistry is what makes the production so memorable. You get the sense that every performance is slightly different, with the cast feeding off each other’s energy as much as the audience’s laughter. It’s this playful spontaneity that makes Nuns! feel like a true live theatre experience and one that’s well worth seeing more than once.
Final thoughts
Nuns! is everything you hope to find at the Edinburgh Fringe: brilliantly funny, wonderfully unpredictable and performed by a cast whose enthusiasm is impossible to resist. It’s the sort of show you leave quoting to your friends before immediately telling them to book a ticket. I’d happily watch it again, and I probably will.
Nuns!
Summary
Overall, a brilliantly funny, feel-good comedy with outstanding chemistry, infectious energy and a cast that makes every performance feel unique. A must-see at this year’s Fringe.
