Kevin Quantum’s show, Unbelievable Magic for Non-Believers, is certainly a popular ticket. Performed in one of the giant rooms at the Assembly Rooms on George Street, it’s one of the busiest magic shows at the Fringe.
I know that Quantum has been on a big TV game show; it’s clear his celebrity plays a part in his popularity, but his undeniable talent explains the rest.
The Science of Magic
The show is a clever mix of classic magic and scientific spectacle. Quantum, a former PhD, makes science the star of the show. Tonight’s performance featured Tesla coils zapping away on stage. While he didn’t use the coils constantly, their presence was certainly dramatic. I’m not sure how dangerous it was, but if it was truly hazardous, then he was incredibly brave to allow himself to get zapped by an alleged amount of electricity. It all added to the mystique of the performance.
Beyond the big science props, the magic itself is executed with skill. We saw some very clever mental ‘forcing’, where the magician subtly manipulates your mind with psychology to get you to say what he wants. He also demonstrated clever sleight of hand, mathematical tricks, and a whole lot of great storytelling. The show is packed with magic, even if some of the tricks were familiar. This isn’t a bad thing at all – it means you can compare Quantum’s version to others you may have seen. I can attest that his versions are executed very well.
A Show for Everyone?

The show is aimed at non-believers, but it’s definitely (intended to be) a show for the whole family. I was seated in front of a young girl who I initially thought was too young for a show with an age guidance of 12+. There was an F-bomb or two, and I was convinced she would be bored. To my surprise, the girl, who was definitely under 12, was fully entertained for the entire hour. At one point, the audience is involved in ripping up some paper and throwing it around, and she absolutely loved it. It got me thinking that perhaps we had a budding magician in the audience!
The whole hour flew by, despite the venue being quite warm and the magician clearly suffering from the heat. The show is just long enough to be a treat after work, and a midweek performance was a full house. Kevin Quantum has created a show that keeps everyone engaged, whether they believe in magic or not.
Overall
Kevin Quantum’s show is one of those ‘treat yourself’ Fringe moments. He delivers a charming, well-paced show that is great for magic fans, and while it might not turn a hardened sceptic into a true believer, it’s a brilliant night out. The show is packed with clever tricks, dramatic props, and a sense of fun that is hard to resist. The performance is well worth the price of admission.
