Review: Kai Thai, Thai Street Food on Easter Road

Easter Road has a new culinary arrival, and it’s a vibrant one. Kai Thai, a new Thai street food restaurant, was an oasis of bright colour on an otherwise dreary Monday night. Its warm reds and oranges were a welcoming flame that drew me in.

I popped in to discover they were on a “soft launch” – a test run before their official opening. But based on this first experience, Kai Thai is already a promising and impressive addition to the neighbourhood.

The Food

The menu, which may expand after the soft launch, is currently a well-formed list of Thai classics: sides, salads, curries, soups, and noodle dishes.

I opted for the Chicken Red Curry with Jasmine rice on the side. I was immediately impressed. The portion size was generous, the chicken was very good, and the presentation was spot-on. The curry itself was rich and flavourful, and the rice was cooked perfectly.

I do regret not being more adventurous. The chicken skewers caught my eye and the sweetcorn fritters, which I’ll have to try next time. I’m also curious about the spicy beef salad.

Kai Thai offers excellent value. I’m a big eater, and the £15 platter deal seems like a fantastic bargain. I also noted a “Kai Kids” meal section, offering yellow noodles or egg-fried rice with a drink for about £6, which is very impressive for families.

The Venue and Vibe

Kai Thai is located near the Albion Road end of Easter Road. It’s not huge, but it’s much more than just a takeaway. I sat in and received pleasant table service in a spotlessly clean dining area.

The space is intimate, with maybe four or five tables. It’s perfect for couples or small groups. A group of four might need to push two tables together, but I’m sure the friendly team would accommodate.

While I ate my tempting Thai curry, several people came in for takeaways. What struck me was that some appeared to be return visitors. For a restaurant that hasn’t even officially opened, getting repeat custom is a really good sign.

Things to do in Easter Road

Easter Road is perfectly placed between Leith and the city centre. It’s a short bus ride or a pleasant walk from the Edinburgh Playhouse, making Kai Thai a great option for a pre-theatre meal.

You’re also not far from the foot of Calton Hill or the Palace of Holyroodhouse. For transport, the area is well served by Lothian Buses, and Waverley Station is easily reachable.

There’s also the football.

Kai Thai is a wonderful new Thai street food spot that feels like a hidden gem. With good enough portion sizes, excellent quality, and a welcoming, colourful atmosphere, it’s a solid recommendation for a casual meal or a top-notch takeaway.
