Review: Diggers Leith – a pub in Leith

February 16, 2026 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Diggers Leith is the latest incarnation of a space on Bernard Street that some locals have started to consider a cursed spot. Over the years, this corner has seen the likes of Isobar, Mamasan’s, and, most recently, Chancho come and go. Now, the team behind the legendary Athletic Arms in Dalry has taken the reins, bringing their famous Diggers brand to the shore.

The original Athletic Arms earned its nickname because of its proximity to two graveyards. While Diggers Leith is not quite as close to any cemeteries, the local pedigree is immediately apparent. This is a pub that knows exactly what it wants to be. If the opening weekend was any indication, the curse of the Bernard Street corner might finally be broken.

The Spirit of the Athletic Arms

The venue has hit the ground running with a soft launch that coincided with Scotland’s Calcutta Cup win. The atmosphere was electric. Locals have gravitated to this spot in a way that suggests Leith was crying out for a dependable, high-quality pub on this specific corner. It is a space where sports fans and casual drinkers mingle effortlessly.

While the layout retains some of the bones of its predecessor, Chancho, there are noticeable shifts in the vibe. The bar stools have been removed and replaced by a slim shelf along the opposite wall, maximising floor space for a standing crowd. The tables are cosy, designed for small groups of two or three. It is a functional and social design that prioritises movement and conversation.

The upstairs area and the kitchen are not yet open, but the potential is enormous. For those who remember the food-oriented days of Mamasan, the promise of a working kitchen is a major draw. For now, the focus is firmly on the drink, and the footfall suggests that the community is more than happy to support that transition.

A Dram Fine Selection

One of the standout features of Diggers Leith is the impressive whisky selection. It is more than just a back-shelf collection; it is a curated experience. The bar staff are knowledgeable and ready with recommendations that hit the mark every time. Pairing a dram with a pint has become a highlight of the visit for many early patrons.

The beer list is equally thoughtful. Alongside the expected brewery staples that come with a franchise-owned establishment, you will find local gems like Pilot. Seeing Leith-brewed beer on the taps is a welcome touch that anchors the pub in its new neighbourhood. It is a refreshing mix of the familiar and the artisanal.

The service is sharp even during the busiest rushes. Despite the crowds, the team maintains a friendly and efficient pace. It is the kind of hospitality that makes you want to settle in for the afternoon. Diggers Leith feels like a pub that has been part of the street for years, not just a few days.

Things to do in Leith

Leith is a hub of activity, and Diggers is perfectly positioned to explore it. Just a short walk away is the iconic Robert Burns statue, marking the gateway to the historic Shore area. If you are visiting from further afield, you can secure your travel via Trainline to Edinburgh Waverley and hop on the tram. The pub is conveniently adjacent to the tram track on Constitution Street.

Food options nearby are excellent if the pub kitchen is not yet serving. Sweet October offers fantastic artisan baking, while Pierinos is a multi-award-winning chip shop right on the doorstep. For those looking to stay overnight, Booking.com offers various options, or you might consider the Village Hotel, which is within easy reach of the North Edinburgh area.

If you are planning a wider tour of the city, Argus Car Hire provides flexibility for exploring the coast. Always ensure you have AllClear Travel Insurance if you are visiting from overseas. For an evening of entertainment after your pint, the nearby Odeon Cinema at Ocean Terminal is a great choice for catching the latest blockbusters.

Diggers Leith is a confident and welcome addition to Bernard Street. By bringing the heritage of the Athletic Arms to the heart of Leith, the team has created a space that feels both traditional and fresh. The combination of a top-tier whisky selection and a vibrant local atmosphere makes it an essential stop for any pub enthusiast. It is definitely one for the radar.
