Review: Crybaby, a Jukebox and Chicken Wing Pub in Stockbridge

September 16, 2025 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Just off the main road in Stockbridge, on Dean Street, you’ll find a splash of colour and a hint of rebellion. Crybaby is a quirky, vibrant bar that offers a different flavour to the more traditional pubs in this part of Edinburgh. The first thing you might notice is the counter, proudly displaying a running tally of the chicken wings it has served. The number is already well into the thousands, and it’s a clear sign of what this place does best.

Crybaby

Crybaby has a friendly, laid-back feel. It has never been uncomfortably busy on my visits, but it’s never been dead either, striking a perfect balance for a relaxed evening. It feels like a modern take on a classic jukebox joint, with a bit of a rocker’s edge.

The Food & Drink

The main event here is undoubtedly the chicken wings. They’re the star of the show, and the reason for that impressive counter. I opted for them on my second visit and they were deliciously messy, but the supplied napkins were more than enough to handle the job without a trip to the gents. This is a satisfying, protein-rich meal that hits the spot.

If you don’t fancy getting your fingers sticky, there are other options like a classic Smashburger, which I enjoyed on my first visit. The menu philosophy is as direct as the music. The bar’s name, Crybaby, seems to come from its “no crybabies” policy on food orders. You get what the menu says, with no substitutions. It’s a refreshingly straightforward approach: order what’s offered and enjoy it as the chef intended.

The cocktails are good, with quirkily named options like the ‘Punch Me Daddy’ adding to the bar’s playful personality. The one slight disappointment was the apparent lack of any local Edinburgh brews on tap. In a city with such a thriving craft beer scene, it feels like a missed opportunity for a pub not to feature at least one local option.

The Venue & Vibe

Let’s call Crybaby what it is: a jukebox pub. Patrons control the soundtrack via a digital jukebox, and the music plays out over big screens dotted around the bar. Despite the loud music, the atmosphere is not intimidating or overly intense. It’s got a fun, energetic vibe that encourages you to settle in for a while.

This would be an interesting date spot, whether you’re an old rocker or a young one. It’s the sort of place that doesn’t take itself too seriously and offers a welcome alternative to the sometimes-pretentious haunts in the neighbourhood. For a fairly priced drink and a great meal away from the crowds, I would absolutely step the 90 seconds off the main road to come here.

“It’s my sort of pub. I wish it well.”

Things to do in Stockbridge

Stockbridge is one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque neighbourhoods. Visitors can enjoy a scenic walk along the Water of Leith, visit the Royal Botanic Garden, or browse the many independent boutiques and charity shops. The famous Stockbridge Market is a must-visit on a Sunday for street food and local crafts. While it’s a very walkable area, it is well-served by Lothian Buses. For those travelling from further afield, Edinburgh Waverley and Haymarket stations are a short taxi or bus ride away; book your journey via TheTrainLine. If you’re planning a stay, you can find a range of nearby accommodation on Expedia. And if you’re travelling with luggage, you can leave it securely at a local partner with Radical Storage.

Overall

Crybaby chicken wings

Crybaby is a fantastic addition to the Stockbridge scene. It’s a colourful, no-nonsense bar with a clear identity and a menu that delivers. If you’re looking for expertly made chicken wings, a fun jukebox-driven atmosphere, and a break from the norm, this is the place for you. It’s a brilliant, fairly priced gem that’s well worth seeking out.
