Review: Civerinos Pizza, Hunter Sq.

February 29, 2024 by Bronwen Winter Phoenix Leave a Comment

Girdy & Birdy headed to Civerinos Pizza on Hunter Square (otherwise known as ‘the original’ Civerinos Pizza) – and weren’t disappointed!

I’d heard a lot about Civerinos, mainly from Girdy, so when he suggested we head there for a review, I was delighted! I know this place has a great reputation, and the pizzas almost look phenomenal on their social media.

I was lucky enough to actually try a slice when the Civerino’s Slice crew provided some pizzas to the New Year, New Me, New World Order exhibition I was a part of at Edinburgh Palette – and that was pretty nice, albeit a plain margherita pizza. I wanted to see what else was possible!

Civerinos’ vibe

I love love LOVE Civerino’s vibe! There’s lots to look at one the walls, and it’s a really nice space to sit and eat pizza in!

The place was quite buzzing for a week night, which was a great sign, and despite that we still got a really nice table with plenty of space for just the two of us.

It was an all-round good atmosphere, and it set me in a really fab mood for the evening.

From memory, I think I might have arrived before Girdy (I often do) and got some good footage of the place, which you can see some of in my video to the right here.

I was SO READY for my pizza, though – I think it’d been a long day.

I think that’s why we decided we were going to eat all the food ever, actually (although Girdy never takes much persuading on that front).

Civerinos’ food & drink

We both decided to start by trying the giant mozzarella sticks, and they really weren’t kidding!

Did I really need that much cheese? Nope, but I was starving so I eat heartily and enjoyed it muchly. You can choose different sauces, and I just went with a plain tomato base. Nom!

For my main, I felt like I couldn’t go to Civerino’s without ordering a pizza, so that’s exactly what I did. I decided to mix my menu choice up a bit, by ordering a mainly vegan pizza but with mozzarella cheese and Italian sausage!

I stand by my choice, it was absolutely delicious. I was starting to get full, so Girdy helped me out a bit, but I still felt sad at leaving one slice uneaten! I’ll definitely be back.

Girdy, the pizza addict, surprised me by NOT ordering a pizza, but instead had a spaghetti carbonara. It was apparently very good, and he wolfed in down pretty quickly, allowing him time to also help me with my pizza. Thanks, Girdy!

For dessert, we both ordered the tiramisu, although I remember it actually wasn’t Girdy’s first choice, but another dessert item had ran out (due to it being in such high demand!) so he happily accepted this instead. It was a very tasty pick-me-up indeed!

Civerinos’ staff

Civerino’s staff were welcoming, efficient and were clearly used to dealing with a busy pizza place. I was grateful to them for accommodating my pizza experiment, and said as long as it wasn’t too much of a deviation, it was fine to switch out pizza toppings. Win!

We were served quickly, and didn’t have to wait long at all for our food. No complaints here.

Things to do in the city centre

There’s so much to do in the City Centre of Edinburgh, you’re really spoilt for choice. Civerino’s is located very close to the Tron Kirk, which holds markets run by the Scottish Design Exchange.

If you decide to go walking the mile, walking the mile, walking the Royal Mile you’ll encounter many little shops, and eventually you’ll reach Edinburgh Castle! From there, you can look over the whole city, with a good view of Princes Street and the surrounding area.

There’s no shortage of hotels to choose from, and for shopping, there’s also Princes Street and St James Quarter – Waverley Mall, too.

Overall

Myself and Girdy had a really enjoyable visit to Civerinos on Hunter Sq. and I’m really glad I finally managed to try it!

I’m still thinking about that pizza, so I’ll definitely be back at some point.

Highly recommended if you’re looking for a good night out, with great pizza – just remember to book first!
