Anti-worlds has announced that THE LAST SACRIFICE, the chilling new feature documentary from award-winning director Rupert Russell, will be screening in select UK cinemas this autumn, including a special Halloween date at Edinburgh’s Cameo.

The Last Sacrifice

The film, which has been gaining rave reviews during its recent festival appearances, delves into the real-life 1945 witchcraft killing of Charles Walton. This terrifying event was the direct inspiration for THE WICKER MAN and is considered by many to be the birth of the folk horror genre.

Critics have been unanimous in their praise:

“Russell’s The Last Sacrifice is destined to become a classic” Dangerous Minds ★★★★★

“A spellbinding experience that delves into the old religions, rituals, murder and the birth of the folk horror genre.” Horror Cult Films ★★★★★

“A brilliantly executed deep dive into the shocking murder that went on to inspire a brand-new horror genre.” Hey U Guys ★★★★

This unsettling true-crime interrogation probes into the eerie, enigmatic cultural undercurrents that shaped 1970s folk horror, leaving an indelible mark on cinema and the public psyche.

Director Rupert Russell says of the film:

I was drawn to mystery of Charles Walton’s unsolved murder because it is also the mystery of Britain itself – its secrets, its darkness, its unique flavour of madness… A reality that Briton’s face in 2024 just as much as they did in 1973 or 1945. Why are we compelled to burn it all down?”

Adding to the atmosphere, THE LAST SACRIFICE features a score composed by Mike Lindsay, co-founder and frontman of the British folktronica band Tunng. A limited edition release of the score on coloured vinyl will be available from October 28th.

The Edinburgh screening, part of a tour of special Halloween screenings and Q&As, will take place at The Cameo on October 30th.

    (Cert 15 (TBC) / Run Time: 94mins)
