The Scottish Ensemble is set to provide a perfect escape from the biting winter nights, bringing its celebrated Concerts by Candlelight tour back to Edinburgh this December 2025.

The tour promises an enchanting evening of music, offering audiences warmth and serenity in an atmospheric setting. The 75-minute performance lands in the capital on Tuesday, 09 December 2025.

A Musical Journey by Candlelight

The Edinburgh date for your calendar is Tuesday, 09 December 2025, with the performance starting at 7.30pm. The chosen venue is the historic Greyfriars Kirk, a perfect intimate setting for this event.

The programme offers a captivating musical journey, featuring works by classical greats like JS Bach and Mozart alongside modern composers such as Phillip Glass and Caroline Shaw.

This year’s tour also features the UK premiere of Moments of Memory VI, a new work by Valentin Silvestrov. Silvestrov is a Ukrainian composer known for music of serenity, currently living in exile in Germany.

Jonathan Morton, Artistic Director of Scottish Ensemble, said the tour is a chance to be “enveloping our audiences in the warmth of this beautiful music.”

The performance will also be a debut for one of the Ensemble’s 2025 Young Artists, viola player Lauren Jack. She described working with the ensemble as “so inspiring,” adding they “really encouraged us to think about all the dimensions of the music.”

Tickets are priced from £13 to £25 and are free for under-16s.

Things to do in the Southside

Greyfriars Kirk is located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, near the lively Southside area, making it an ideal location for an evening out.

  • Transport: The venue is easily accessible. Numerous Lothian Buses stop on George IV Bridge and Bristo Square. For those travelling by train, Edinburgh Waverley railway station is about a 15-minute walk away; you can check schedules on TheTrainLine. If you are driving, parking is very limited, so using a car hire to reach a park-and-ride site is a smart option.
  • Food & Drink: The Southside and the nearby Grassmarket are packed with cosy pubs and restaurants, perfect for a pre-concert meal or a warming drink.
  • Accommodation: If you are travelling to the city for the concert, the area has many hotels and apartments. You can browse nearby options on Booking.com. For a longer stay, holiday lets are also available on sites like Vrbo. Visitors flying in can reach the city centre from Edinburgh Airport via tram or bus.

For your Radar

This event is firmly on our radar as a moment of culture and calm before the main festive rush begins. The Scottish Ensemble’s Concerts by Candlelight offers a 75-minute performance of “inspiring” music in one of the city’s most beautiful historic buildings.

The fact that tickets are free for under-16s makes this an excellent and accessible opportunity to experience a world-class string ensemble in a truly unique, candlelit setting.
