Competition: Adulteress. Whore. Murderess – Win a copy of Kate Foster’s ‘The Maiden’

April 27, 2023 by Andrew Girdwood Leave a Comment

Released just today by publisher Mantle and written today by the Scottish Daily Mail’s Health editor and author Kate Foster The Maiden. You can win a copy here on Edinburgh Reviews.

Fellow author Mary Paulson-Ellis who wrote Emily Noble’s Disgrace, described the story;

A pleasingly female-led re-imagining of true historical events, The Maiden brings 17th century Edinburgh vividly to life in all its colour and stink”

The Maiden

The official synopsis says;

Lady Christian Nimmo is arrested and charged with the murder of her lover, James Forrester. News of her imprisonment and subsequent trial is splashed across the broadsides, with headlines that leave little room for doubt: Adulteress. Whore. Murderess. Only a year before, Christian was leading a life of privilege and respectability. So, what led her to risk everything for an affair? And does that make her guilty of murder? She wasn’t the only woman in Forrester’s life, and certainly not the only one who might have had cause to wish him dead …

The Maiden is set in Edinburgh in 1679, hence Edinburgh Review’s interest. Kate grew up on Corstorphine, and a local murder story inspires the story. Corstorphine locals sometimes say that the ghost of one of The Maiden’s characters haunts the area, and while that terrified a young Foster, it also helped inspire the book.
