A picture book musical adventure that comes with colouring sheets and stickers? Getting tickets to Milly’s Musical Adventure for my toddler was a no brainer!
Background
Developed by Grownup Playhouse, a small creative team set up in 2023, Milly’s Musical Adventure tells the tale of a young girl Milly who lives in a world without music and prompted by a magical request from a book embarks on a wonderful adventure to gather songs to bring music back to her world.
With quirky friendships made along the way, a little help from the audience and a narrow escape from a sneaky snake, it’s a fun and cosy little journey to see Milly grow new skills and succeed in her quest!
What to expect
Set inside the cosy ‘Just The Fancy’ room within the caves, the closeknit environment makes you feel immediately immersed in the story and cast from the get go- though be warned in these warm August temperatures it can get toasty so avoid big jackets and bring something to fan yourself with!
The plot and songs of the show tell a lovely happy tale that is easy to follow for wee ones and draws you right in rooting for Milly to win from the opening line. The colourful set and costumes and catchy tunes had my toddler totally captivated for the whole 40 minutes and the regular chances for audience participation (NO MILLY TOILET ROLL WONT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS) is ideal for entertaining littles.
The message of the play is very cute and positive with each animal friend Milly makes teaching her another skill to help her on the way- the lovely and beautiful songbirds teach the importance of play and always having a safe place to come home to, the funky hedgehogs remind us of how much we need to follow our dreams and the cool beavers help us learn that work can be fun. I’m not sure who needed these lessons more- Milly or me!
The cast work so well together as a team and create a great performance but special shout out needs to be given to Lizzy Monds as Milly- with her personality, stage presence and engagement with the kids in the audience that Ms Rachel would be proud of, someone get that girl a CBBC show ASAP!
Overall
Milly’s Musical Adventure has all the hallmarks of the unpolished, original group production that Fringe is truly all about. Its fun, funny and full of catchy songs and positive messages for wee people and their parents performed by a lovely cast.
The opportunity for kids to meet and greet with the cast and buy the book (complete with QR codes to allow you to listen and sing along while you read) is really the cherry on top of the cake of a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
