Review: The Most Toast, Fringe 2025

August 16, 2025 by Guest Reviewer Leave a Comment

Absolutely nothing could have prepared me for The Most Toast despite it delivering exactly what it promised on the tin… an hour long interrogation to establish who in the audience had eaten the most toast.

The vibe

From the moment we arrived at Hoots @ The Apex the front of house staff were working hard to set the tone for the show ahead. We were given name tags and told to mill about quietly, before being allowed into the room under “exam conditions”.

This was very strictly enforced with multiple audience members (including myself) shushed or told off for using phones or taking photos. If you don’t want to feel like a naughty child, definitely best to follow the rules!

The show

The paradox of The Most Toast is that while it couldn’t have been clearer through the title what it was about, nobody in the audience was prepared with an answer. Perhaps we were lulled into a false sense of security by the cute and cheery logo of a marching slice of toast on the promotional materials?

This lack of forethought was exactly what the cast pounced upon, displaying their crowd work skills over the ensuing hour. I was impressed how much could be made of so little, including a full grilling over whether toasted bread used in sandwiches should count.

A warning though that if you are not into audience participation, this may not be the show for you… nobody was spared and those who attempted to duck and weave were judiciously called upon to defend their toast eating habits.

The searing interrogation was enhanced by the witty written commentary of our lab assistant who pulled no punches in offering her own assessments of the credibility and confidence of the toast consumption estimates. It’s perhaps the most I’ve ever laughed in an exam.

In summary

Prepare for a roast and to account for every piece of toast which has ever crossed your lips. This immersive experience is exactly the kind of show you come to the fringe for.

An interrogation no-one quite expects, despite the name of the show!

Summary

Can you find out who in the audience has eaten the most toast, not just for today, but in their lifetime? This hour-long show aims to do just that.
