Review: Moon Dragon for Under 6, Fringe 2025

August 11, 2025 by Guest Reviewer Leave a Comment

For children under six, Moon Dragon is a tender, immersive theatre experience that blends beautiful puppetry, gentle storytelling, and soft music to create a world both magical and welcoming.

This isn’t a performance where young audiences are expected to sit still in silence! it’s a show where curiosity, movement, and imagination are embraced.

A world brought to life with puppets

The stars of the story are two exquisitely hand made dragon puppets, each crafted with loving detail that makes them both believable and enchanting. They move with lifelike grace, drawing wide-eyed gazes from little ones and smiles from adults.

The puppets are not simply props, they are characters in their own right, integral to the storytelling. The children got to touch them as the puppets came through the audience during the story. Who doesn’t want to pet a dragon puppet?

Interactive and child-centred

From the very start, children are made to feel part of the adventure. Each is given an age appropriate prop bag, carefully designed to tie in with the story. These small treasures encourage engagement without pressure, allowing children to interact at their own comfort level. The space itself is super  relaxed. Children can sit on the floor close to the action or opt for a chair if they prefer. This freedom means no fidgeting frustration, only calm enjoyment or dancing around with props.

Gentle storytelling and music

The show is led by two warm voiced actresses who weave the narrative with care. Their storytelling voices shift between soothing and expressive, perfectly capturing the mood of each scene. Accompanying them is a third performer, a talented female musician on keyboard, who underscores the story with a gentle, melodic score. Signing is incorporated into the performance, making it more inclusive and adding a beautiful, visual rhythm to the words.

Atmosphere of calm wonder

Dim lighting, light-up toys, and a parachute sprinkled with stars transform the space into a cosy dream world. The effect is magical without being overwhelming, perfect for young children who might find louder, brighter shows too stimulating. The pacing is calm, the tone sweet, and the overall atmosphere feels safe and welcoming.

A standout for parents of energetic kids

For my little boy, Moon Dragon was pure joy. He especially loved the freedom to dance around, twirl his light-up toy, and interact with the performers without feeling confined. It’s rare to find a show that caters so beautifully to young children’s needs while still offering a rich, high quality theatrical experience.

Final thoughts

Moon Dragon is a gentle gem of children’s theatre, magical, sweet, and perfectly pitched for under sixes. With its blend of puppetry, music, storytelling, and interactive elements, it’s a show that will leave little hearts full and imaginations soaring.
