I don’t have a bumper sticker that says, “My other blog is a geek blog”, because I don’t have a car to attach the bumper.
I don’t have a car, in part because I spend my money on dice, books and the cost of running my geek blog.
With that in mind, I hope you will forgive me when I admit my first reaction to Pizza Geeks opening on Commercial Street, by the bridge, off the Shore in Leith, was to notice that they mixed franchises. They seemed to have both a Stormtrooper helmet logo and a Tardis.
However, each Pizza Geeks (the Stormtrooper/pizza shovel logo) location is named after a geeky place, and Leith is the Tardis. This explains the mix.
Since then, I’ve been three many times (but always sometimes during a light lockdown, never often in normal times), used their delivery one and done the takeaway once.
It’s always been excellent. Always. But, if I have to rank the experiences, I’ll point out that Pizza Geeks make delightfully thin pizza bases and the thermodynamics, which means they lose their heat reasonably quickly. It’s best to eat in. Then, unless you have a thermal carrying case for the pizza, second best to get a professional delivery.
I believe they’re also now on Deliveroo. So, in the interest of scientific vigour, I’ll have to test that delivery system later.
Update: There’s also their app which might be a better option to support the local business. You can get it for iOS and Android.
Eat in at Pizza Geeks
Staff are always attentive, pleasant and professional. Even that time I was waiting outside their door as they pulled it open at lunch. They took me in straight away.
I’ve tried The Honny Blaze (pepperoni, chilli, et al.), The Millennium Chicken (pulled chicken, bbq sauce, et al.), the Blanka (ham hock, blue cheese, hot sriracha sauce, et al.) and The Chorizard (black pudding, honey et al.) for mains. I think you’ll see those are not familiar or usual pizza designs.
Trust me; they all work. Yum.
Furthermore, the food always arrives quickly and hot.
Sadly, I don’t think you can get my top tip on delivery. It’s a dessert pizza; the Forbidden Forest (fruit and melted chocolate). I’ve eaten it twice, a whole one each time, and all for myself.
I’ll do it again! Without shame!
Please note that the other venues, the Mothership and Kitchen Resident, have their own menus. There might be differences.
The decor is notable too, geeky art, like my home. The Tardis in Leith isn’t massive, but during COVID-19 times there was enough space between tables, and I’ve always got a seat. However, unlike the Hard Rock Cafe, where there’s the suspicion the cost of your food covers the cost of some B-list celeb auction wins, Pizza Geeks decorations (or some of it) are more commonly sourced. It’s not that they’re rare; it’s the vibe they bring to the place.
Pizza Geek delivery
I’ve mentioned Deliveroo, but that means that an Amazon-backed company takes a slice. You might well want to check out Pizza Geeks online.
You can order a delivery or arrange a takeaway. Frankly, if you can navigate your way around this blog, you can cope with their UX.
I ordered my delivery on a busy Friday night, and the speed at which the pizza came was competitive with any of the big franchises. The quality of the pizza, of course, is so much better.
It’s just a shame, even if it is understandable, that the range of delivery options isn’t the same as in the restaurant.
Update: April 2023
I wrote this review first in 2021. It is now 2023, and I rate Pizza Geeks just as highly. I note also they’ve expanded into charity work but sadly, I’ve not seen that chocolate pizza in a while. I’ve refreshed this review.
Pizza Geeks, Leith
Summary
I eat a lot of pizza; I know many of the best places to get pizza in Edinburgh, and Pizza Geeks is one of the best.
There are a few ways to order your Pizza Geeks, such as Deliveroo and the PG’s own iOS and Android app.
