About two years ago Edinburgh Reviews wrote about the plucky Union of Genius using Kickstarter to fund a move.
They’re at it again. The kitchen they couldn’t outgrow –they’ve outgrown. I might be a bit skeptical about using Kickstarter in this way but the UoG supply their soups to charity and build community.
As the video pitch explains they’ve just a short while to pay the landlord and expand into the unit, now empty, beside them.
The Union are looking to raise £10,000 on Kickstarter. At the time of writing they’ve surged past £3,000 from over 40 backers. Time is short; they’ve only 18 days left. This can happen but people need to chip in.
What do you get for chipping in? £10 gets you a soupon – that’s a PDF coupon that’ll be good for a large soup before the end of 2016, £15 gets you a recipe collection, jump up to £40 and you start to take home t-shirts, bags plus the soup and there are higher pledges for those who really want to back the cause. In fact, you can go up to £2,000 and be Soup Khaleesi!
If you’ve not yet watched the pitch video, you should.

Hi Bruce here, co-owner of Union of Genius. Thanks for the article. I know what you mean about being “skeptical” as so were we. In the end, when we looked at the possible outcomes we found that bypassing the banks potentially enabled us to “give a lot more back” rather than paying exorbitant interest rates. So it fits our ethos better. By the way, we did take your t-shirts comments on board after the last kickstarter. Unfortunately, given the way that merchandise rewards work, this is the lowest price we can do it for. Annoyingly we thought of a new low-price merchandise reward too late.
